The project Agriculture Commodity Trade (ACT) took a significant step forward by signing an agreement with Aziz Group, Multan on May 27. Aziz Group thus became the first customer for the ACT project.
ACT earlier ran a successful pilot for providing produce wholesale prices with Agha Khan Rural Support Program and the Punjab government. The project is now beginning agri transactions by targeting wholesalers of farm inputs and bulk buyers of farm produce.

What is ACT?
The ACT project was launched by Corporate Development in Telenor ASA under Ulf Karlsen and aims to provide mobile transaction and information solutions for the agriculture sector. It particularly focuses on providing benefits to the farmer by increasing his margins, while attempting to reduce the frictions and inefficiencies in the agriculture value chain. Corporate Development chose Pakistan as the trial market for this project and it is now housed in the Financial Services division.
The signing with Aziz Group; A trial for emandi
The objective of the solution provided to Aziz Group Agri Farm Services is to bring efficiency in inventory movement using emandi and providing cashless transactions using easypaisa, where emandi is the information and inventory management system developed by the ACT project for the agriculture sector. Following the success of this project the team will focus on expansion of the emandi service to a wider audience in the agriculture sector together with increased number of easypaisa transactions.
The ACT project will help to expand the footprint of easypaisa in rural areas and educate farmers on its usage.

The project is being led by Tughral Turab Ali from Telenor Pakistan. Tuhin Islam from Grameenphone has developed the entire technical solution in-house. The project is also receiving solid support from Mr. Hashim Butt of Financial Services Sales, Mr. Muhammad Aslam of Corporate Sales and Mr. Farooq Sheikh, Regional Director SnD Central-3.
About Aziz Group
Aziz Group is based in Multan and is engaged in selling pesticides, fertilizers and seeds to farmers. They have a franchisee network of over 1000 locations spread around central Punjab and are also the corporate clients of Telenor Pakisan for the last 2 years. The project will focus on 10 franchise locations around Multan for the trial and Aziz Group is eager to expand this number to include the rest of their network.

The emandi team is now developing some simple marketing tools for the agents that is intended to boost the local awareness of the emandi agent. The first step is a poster that the agent can print out himself from any black and white printer. At the moment the agent need to fill in his own number but we hope to have an automated solution out soon. The idea is that interested farmers or traders can tear off a strip at the end of the poster with the emandi agent’s number so that (s)he has that number available when there is a need to get a second opinion on a purchase of fertilizer or sales of dried tomatoes
We hope that this first attempt will fuel ideas on how the emandi team can help you as an agent to create awareness and trust in your local community. If you have ideas feel free to sms on 03428740005 and we call you back!
Good luck
emandi team

The FOs
On Friday 29th May a training session for about 60 AAG Field Officers (FO) were held in AAG HQ audiotorium. It was a different training from what we have done earlier (1 or 2 agents at a time in the market / field / on-the-job-training) and it took a bit time to get started (the list of agents and markets that were prepared were different from the FOs that was there hence we had to issue unregistered emandi SIMs and do the full registration process.
The session itself was conducted by Talha -his first mass-training held -it will not be his last as he did a good job (although facing some resistance at one point regarding payments)

FOs being registered
One of the crucial points in the near future is to be able to give instructions from the emandi head quarter to these agents for the improvement of their private AAG data uplaod and regular emandi price updates as they seldom (or some never)Â put the SIMs in their private handsets. Hence we should slowly try to induce a ‘one hour per day’ policy so we will be able to get and send data to these new agents.

In any case it was a good learning for the emandi team and we hope that AAG will have good use of its new communication tool in the future.

Â
Today the first consultancy revnenues to emandi agents was paid out. The revenue calculations are fairly simple: for every started minute of received (incoming) call the agent will earn 1 PKR if the caller pays his/her emandi bill.
Â
Â
Remember that the customer can pay in two ways:
- either by buying a scratch card from Telenor and send the hidden number to 62634 OR
- (s)he can visit an emandi agent and pay directly (then the emandi agent simply sends space -example: 03428740001 100 to 422). The amount received directly will be deduced from next salary disburesement.
The amount you will receive is visible on the flake in www.emandi.mobi site called ‘Agent Received Calls’ -it will not be real time as we are getting the reports somewhat late from the operators
Good luck

Hi,
The second version of the e-mandi grading booklet will be out very soon. Building up on the first version, we have included many new interesting and helpful features in the newer version. Let me take you through some of them:
1.  Bi-lingual text and a changed layout:
Probably the most interesting addition in this version is that the booklet is now both in English and Urdu. For easy reference and better coherence, the booklet has instructions, and product and packing descriptions in Urdu as well. We have also changed the page layout to landscape so that more information is squeezed into lesser space. Now you can get double the information in the same space.
2.  New and more comprehensive instructions:
We have significantly added to the instructions, while also introducing new features such as “Take a Survey” which enables all agents to take part in a mobi-survey based on relevant questions. No more free spaces inside the booklet; we have covered them all with useful tips and instructions to help you operate better.
3.  More products:
The produce list has been expanded and now stands at a total of 52 edible agricultural produce. Also, included is a list of herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers, which bring us to the next feature…
4.  Ali Akbar Group… tools, products:
Let us take this opportunity to welcome aboard fellow agents from the Ali Akbar Group (AAG). AAG agents will be able to use emandi tools as well, along with some tools especially designed for them. For example, you don’t need to worry about stock-outs anymore. Just sending an sms will take care of that little problem. As mentioned, the list of insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers from AAG signals a continuation of our march towards comprehensive agri solutions.
5.  Emandi agent and market:
Get a better idea of the scope and scale of emandi and contact fellow agents in other areas of the country through our updated lists.
The booklet is being sent to print shortly, and we expect to have them delivered to you by mid-May. We look forward to your feedback. Here are some excerpts from the booklet.

We in the ACT project team is proud to launch the emandi service today –at first we are focusing on training the Local Support Organizations to become good consultants for the farming community in the Northern Areas with price information tools, grading handbook and Newsletters.
It is important that we get input from the emandi agents on what we should focus on from Telenor side so we can develop the best tools for you as an agent. This blog is meant as an information broadcasting forum for emandi agents (not our customers) hence we can allow ourselves to be frank and pose questions -use the comments feature and let your opinion be heard!
Good luck fellow agents and thank you for contributing to a small revolution in the Pakistani agricultural sector!
